Fire update - August 1

A reminder that a campfire ban is now in place for the Cariboo as of yesterday.  Official details here. I would not be surprised if an off-road vehicle ban was implemented in the coming days.

A helicopter is currently (8pm) flying over Hendrix Peak as I type. Not sure if this is good news or bad.  I'll post an updated later tonight if anything happens.

More thunderstorms across the province today spawned what is possibly a record number of new fires in a single day.  The BC Wildfire page that lists fires over 0.01 hectares shows 51 fires for yesterday and 56 so far today.  Existing smaller fires could grow in the coming days, increasing that number drastically.  This is likely, since there were 132 new fires in total yesterday, and over 300 for the past two days.

Moderate smoke in town today, but a mid-day thunderstorm brought heavy rain and cleared the smoke completely.  Today's high was 23C.

There are currently 27 fires listed as "Out of control" in the Cariboo.

New fires include:

Mt Hendrix - two new fires on the east (near McNeil Lake) and south (near the apex of the McNeil FSR).  Not likely very big, no smoke is visible.

McNeil Lake - two new fires on the east side of the lake.  No smoke visible.

Boss Mountain - near the peak.  No smoke visible.

Canim Lake - south of the lake up in the mountains.

Existing notable fires:
Horse Lake Rd - directly east of 100 Mile House, and north of Horse Lake.  There is now a cluster of sever fires in this area.  No details on any of these fires yet.

Lac la Hache - there are a number of fires in this area.  No details yet.

Horsefly Lake - there are approximately 18 fires around the Horsefly & Quesnel Lake area.  The largest was 50ha this morning, but has grown to 450ha today.  This is an interface fire and so far 93 properties have been impacted.
