Fire update - September 14 (final update)

The 2018 fire season is unofficially over in the Cariboo.  With cooler weather and plenty of rain, the likelihood of more fires is minimal.  Yesterday the Cariboo Fire Centre rescinded the ban on Category 2 fires.  Today, they lifted all remaining evacuation alerts and orders within the centre.

There are still fires burning in BC & within the Cariboo; however, most of the remaining "Out of Control" fires, are some of the largest of the year, and will continue burning until the snow comes.  There should be much less risk to firefighters closing out the season, since these fires will largely be managed from a distance.

2018 BC wildfire stats
June 20-23: 136 new fires, 8 still active
July 17-19:  64 new fires, 11 still active
July 30-Aug 1:  210 new fires, 65 still active
All of May: 125 new fires, 2 still active
All of June: 185 new fires, 10 still active
All of July: 308 new fires, 71 still active
All of Aug: 609 new fires, 274 still active
All of Sept: 23 new fires, 7 still active

Current "Out of Control" fires: 61
Worst single day: Aug 1, 100 new fires
Hectares burned: 1.33 million (most on record for BC)

Note: these stats are for fires greater than 0.01 hectares.  "Active" is any fire that is not "Out".
